Prepping for 5th Grade

Your summer plan

Beat the Summer Slide

Over a long summer, it's easy to forget some of what you learned — teachers call it the summer slide. The cure is simple: keep your brain swimming with a little practice most days. This page has three training stations you can return to all summer, and they make a new problem every time, so you'll never run dry.

Three stations

🐝 Spelling Bee — hear a word, then spell it.
📖 Reading Lab — read a passage and answer questions about it.
🌊 Math Lagoon — pick a 5th-grade skill and solve a never-ending stream. Build a streak!

Goal idea: Each day, get a 5-in-a-row streak in the Math Lagoon, spell 5 words, and read one passage. Keep it up and you'll start 5th grade swimming circles around the summer slide.

Station 1

🐝 Spelling Bee

Hear the word, picture it, then spell it carefully.

Tap Hear the word (your device will say it out loud), read the sentence and hint, then type it. These are 5th-grade words — longer, trickier, and worth knowing.

Spelling practice

Press "New word" to begin.

Spelled right: 0
Stuck? Break the word into syllables and say each part out loud. Long words are easier one chunk at a time.

Station 2

📖 Reading Lab

Read closely, then show you understood it.

Read the passage, then answer the questions. Strong readers reread and look for clues right in the text.

Station 3

🌊 Math Lagoon

Pick a skill, then solve a never-ending stream of 5th-grade problems.

These are the big 5th-grade skills: decimals, fractions, long division, order of operations, and volume. Pick one below — each makes fresh problems forever, and a correct answer keeps your streak alive.

Pro move: Line up decimal points before adding. For fractions, find a common denominator first. For "Order of Operations," remember PEMDAS: parentheses, exponents, ×/÷, then +/−.
